About the CMC
|
|
|
 Originally, the CMC was the meeting point of Canada's top climbers who gathered together to plan expeditions, plot potential first ascents and discuss the advancement of their chosen sport. Today, it still provides this function but also serves as a means for new climbers to meet.
|
|
|
Any member will tell you that it's easy to recognize a CMC member. Defining the distinguishing characteristics of a member though, is another matter. The club tends to attract climbers who take their climbing very seriously and practice climbing not as a sport, but as a way of life.
|
|
|
The club spurns any attempt at organization or bureaucracy, surviving with the minimum amount of infrastructure required to maintain its existence.
|
|
|
Amongst the members of the club are climbers who have summited Everest, have ascended the highest peaks on each continent (the 7 summits), are world renowned climber-photographers, have set speed records on some of the longest climbs in the world, and can claim first ascents on some of the highest, most technically demanding and most grueling climbs ever done.
|
|
|
The CMC plans a number of formal and informal social events to allow its members to meet. Occasionally, we plan events to get our members out climbing together, but normally we are just a vehicle to allow members to make their own plans.
|
|
|
Our members realize that safety in the mountains is each member's individual responsibility. We help each other out (and learn from each other), but nobody, especially the club, accepts any responsibility for the safety or the lives of other members.

|
|

We do not put on courses. This is not a function for the CMC.
|
|
|
We do not compete with the ACC. Many members join both of these clubs. Both clubs fulfill different functions. Most members will tell you that there is no overlap between what they get out of the respective organizations.

|
We don't insure climbers, or officially represent any group of climbers.
|
|
|
We do not officially endorse or encourage any climbing practices. You can't sue us if you have an accident, were just a bunch of climbers that like to get together, besides, we have no money!
|
|
|
We don't try to make money. Our events are held at cost (or below) and the club survives on a shoe string budget. Our members seem to prefer low cost (or no cost) activities. If we ever do make a profit on an event, we use the proceeds to reduce the cost of future events.

Slide Shows: Held approximately monthly at the pub (unless otherwise posted). Check out the events schedule for details. Cocktails at 7:30 PM, Show at 8:30 PM (or as listed)

Memberships: Memberships in the CMC are available to individuals or families. Memberships for individuals are $15. Family memberships (2-5 people) are $20. Multiple spouses of a member are charged a discounted rate. Members sharing the same spouse can apply for a subsidy as can individuals with multiple personalities. 1st year outdoor program students may revel in a complimentary membership, upon approval of an executive member. Join: fill out the membership form and send it in, or... memberships can be purchased from any executive member or... at the Pub on a Wednesday night.
